There are few things more romantic than a beautiful fall afternoon in Paris — and even fewer places more magical for an engagement than the gardens of Versailles.

A few weeks ago, we headed out to Versailles to create a very special afternoon for one of our couples. The plan was simple: a romantic gourmet picnic, a beautiful setting, and a surprise proposal surrounded by the timeless beauty of the gardens.

And what a beautiful afternoon it was.

As the leaves began to turn golden and the soft autumn light filtered through the enormous trees, Versailles seemed to slow down around them. The gardens were peaceful and elegant, with long tree-lined paths, expansive lawns, and that unmistakable feeling of stepping into another time.

A Romantic Picnic Beneath the Trees

We chose one of our favorite quiet corners of the park for their engagement picnic, beneath one of the beautiful old oak trees.

Our signature deco picnic was prepared especially for the occasion, with vintage mats, elegant cushions, cozy blankets and beautiful details designed to make the afternoon feel intimate and special.

There is something particularly magical about Versailles in the fall. The colors, the soft afternoon light and the crispness in the air create the perfect atmosphere for a romantic picnic.

We wanted everything to feel effortless — as though they had simply found a beautiful spot in the gardens to enjoy the afternoon together.

Of course, there was a little secret behind the scenes.

The Moment He Asked

While our couple enjoyed their picnic and took in the beauty of Versailles, we were quietly preparing for the moment.

Then came the question.

He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

For a moment, everything seemed to stop.

The laughter, the surprise, the emotion — it was one of those beautiful moments that photographs can never completely capture, but that you remember forever.

Our photographer was there discreetly, ready to document the proposal without taking anything away from the intimacy of the moment.

And then came the smiles, the hugs and the realization that they had just become engaged in one of the most beautiful places in France.

Versailles in the Fall

We absolutely love planning engagements at Versailles throughout the year, but autumn has a special charm.

The gardens take on warmer tones, the afternoon light becomes softer, and the enormous historic trees create an incredibly romantic backdrop for photographs.

After the proposal, we spent some time wandering through the gardens with our couple, capturing natural moments together. There was plenty of laughter, a little champagne, and lots of time simply enjoying the fact that they were now engaged.

This is one of the things we love most about a Versailles engagement: it doesn’t have to feel rushed.
